All research for this study was instigated by the choice of Dramatic Text. Data on actual readings of both Dramatic and Performance Texts of this play were collected from members of the group as well as from published sources. The play chosen was Daisy Pulls It Off, by Denise Deegan. For this study I required an arbitrary and 'innocent' text to approach free from preconceptions, and accepted as a Dramatic Text the next play chosen by a local drama group, the Chipstead Players, together with their production of it as a Performance Text. This dissertation aims to work towards relating these theories to experience through a cross-theory comparison of possible readings with actual readings of a single play. Academic theories on the construction of meaning by the audience/readers of performed texts sometimes seems at odds with each other, and with my own experience of performance by amateur drama groups.
